Why Tallow?

Why Tallow?

Most soap companies you find today use a combination of oils, fats, and butters to create their beautiful soaps. Each oil, fat, and butter has specific properties that give the soap the characteristics the soaper desires. For instance, coconut oil adds a cleansing property and gives the soap extra bubbly lather, while shea butter gives soap a creamy conditioning feeling and a harder bar of soap.

What is Tallow? Tallow is rendered fat from an animal. We can get tallow from sheep, deer, pigs, etc. At Talley's Soap, we decided to use tallow from cow, also called beef tallow. This type of tallow is creamy white and very stable, lasting on the shelf for a long time.

What led Talley's Soap to use tallow? I have used various types of soap in the past years. I tried the well known store brands, triple milled french soaps, vegan soaps, etc. But, here in the northern US, I would still get the same dry itchy skin to some degree. What was missing? Enter Talley's Soap. My wife and I decided to find that perfect soap for us in the harsh Maine winters.

In our research, we found that beef tallow closly resembles the characteristics of the oils on human skin. Granted, there are differences in the quality of tallow; whether rendered yourself or purchased from a supplier. A high quality, pure, white tallow is best. This tallow adds a creamy conditioning property to soap that no vegan soap can offer. In our testing of our tallow soap, we realized we no longer had dry itchy skin in the dead of winter! Finally, a soap we love using! We also realized, this tallow adds a hardness to our soap. It doesn't easily melt away in the shower like castile soap or some other plant based soap. So, we have a soap that is conditioning and long lasting.

Tallow soap doesn't have the same bubbly lather as other soaps and it can get "too hard" to use. So, we added a combination of skin loving oils such as olive, castor, and coconut to find that perfect balance with tallow to create the rich, creamy lather in a long lasting bar that we provide today. And, if you are wondering if tallow soap smells like an animal, I can assure you that the pure white tallow we use doesn't leave any scent of animal in our products. Our unscented bar is literally unscented!
